Bonjour, chers amis and fellow lovers of all things French! Today, I want to break the ice with our first blog post and share the story of love, inspiration, and the discovery of the artisan pottery that has become central to our brand. If you're interested in joining us on our journey, subscribe to our email list, grab an espresso or a glass of wine, and let’s dive into how our Provencal pottery found its way to Louisville, Kentucky.
A Love Story on Two Wheels
Many who've met us already know that my husband Laurent and I met online during the pandemic with "You've Got Mail"-style communication and deep discussions about how the world was faring across the Atlantic. We practiced our English and French during lockdown through phone screens and kindred spirits as we are, it was only natural that we fell for each other. Head over heals after six months of talking, I was determined to bridge the divide between us and hopped on the first US plane to France the very day that the borders reopened.
The week I arrived, Laurent surprised me with a very southern French date; a motorcycle ride through the winding roads leading up the Alps. On the back of his bike we rode through dense woodland foliage giving way to a breathtaking river that runs through the mountain.
The anticipation built as the motorcycle climbed upward, and when we finally broke through the clearing near the peak, I was met with a medieval village that seemed straight out of a fairy tale with its ancient stone buildings and picturesque setting. It was an artist's dream come true.
This enchanting place is none other than Gourdon, a hidden gem set in the stunning Gorges du Loup (Valley of the Wolf). Laurent shared that he and his family have been visiting this village for years. It’s a beloved destination for the residents of Nice, who often escape there to picnic, and enjoy the spectacular views. Standing there, overlooking the coastal cities of Antibes and Cagnes Sur Mer with the Mediterranean Sea stretching beyond the horizon, my heart felt full. Little did I know that this very inspiration would soon blossom into a budding new business.
The Magic of La Poterie de Gourdon
Among the boutique shops in Gourdon, one stood out – La Poterie de Gourdon, run by its wonderful owners, Chérif and Rachel. Their shop, covered in vibrant hand-painted pottery, drew me up its old stone steps like a moth to a flame. Inside, we found a warm, colorful cavern filled with ceramic celestials, critters, and kitchenware. Each piece was a testament to Provencal artisans’ skill and passion.
It didn't take much time for the concept of what's now Ça et Là to manifest in my heart and mind. Within a year we began discussing with Chérif and Rachel about the prospect of importing French ceramics to the US. These two kind-hearted Buddhists who own Poterie de Gourdon, were incredibly generous and supportive of our dream to start Ça et Là Imports. They became our first partners, encouraging us and giving us the confidence to bring the magic of French artisan goods to my hometown in Louisville, Kentucky.
Through them, we formed another close relationship with Dominique and Thierry, two talented artisans from Cera d'Art, which is central to our business. Their workshop, nestled in the heart of southern France, is where the magic happens. Dominique and Thierry are masters of their craft, creating whimsical ceramic cicadas, vibrant suns, moons, and garden decor. Each piece takes two weeks to craft, from molding the clay to the final hand-painted touches.
We speak with Dominique and Thierry almost weekly, catching up on life and business. Through them, we offer a few exclusive colors and designs available nowhere else at an affordable price. The dedication of Chérif and Rachel and Dominique and Thierry to their business beautifully inspires the path Laurent and I envision for ourselves with Ça et Là.

Bringing French Artistry to Louisville
At Ça et Là, we’ve curated a unique collection of ceramics and pottery from the workshops of Cera d'Art and Terres et Couleur. Our goal is to bring the vibrancy, culture, and whimsical joie de vivre of Provencal artistry to our Louisville community. Each piece we offer is a celebration of the timeless craft of ceramics and the dedicated artisans who create them.
Our selection includes charming French country pottery, Mediterranean-style decor, hand painted ceramics, and more. Every item tells a story of culture, craftsmanship, and tradition.
The Future is Bright
Reflecting on our journey over the last three years, I see a mirror of happy and fulfilled couples in our partners, who have generously shared their lives and craft for years. With these amazing partners at our side, I’m excited for the future of Ça et Là. Together, Laurent and I, with the support of our friends and partners, are building a brand that connects our Louisville family to the heart of French artisanal tradition.
If you ever find yourself in the right neck of the woods, I highly recommend visiting the charming Gourdon, one of the most beautiful villages in France. And for those who can’t make the trip, we bring a piece of that magic to you through our carefully curated selection of artisan pottery, and soon, our brick and mortar bistro and boutique on Frankfort Avenue.
Thank you for being a part of our journey.
